1 thing I would change about our approach

I saw this article, and though a little older, I thought it was interesting (I knowthe KState approach was hailed as gospel on this board awhile ago):

I really believe that it has been a mistake to not utilize the JUCO ranks more to build our defense. I have never understood the dogma on this board that JUCO is basically crap and is somehow the wrong thing to do. I have never understood how high school kids somehow develop over 4-5 years but if they go JUCO, development somehow stops after 2 years.

I think Bohl and company are very good at identifying talent. I know this year, they tried to sign a few more JUCO players on defense, but I still contend that the JUCO ranks have been underutilized this year and the past few years especially since Bohl seems to be pretty good at picking out JUCO talent.

I really like Bohl and I believe he will get things headed in the right direction. I just don't think things had to get this bad first.

I was glad to see us go the JUCO route for the DE and DT to help build depth. But, can't say I would be a fan of building the program with more than a couple JUCO annually.

Bingo. There's a reason those kids went to JUCO. They either weren't good enough or didn't have the grades to go to a 4-year when they left high school - for the most part; I know there are exceptions.

I would rather have a kid on campus for 4 years, learning our system and getting bigger, stronger and faster, than a player that is only slightly better but only has 2 years with us.

Obviously they are players that develop better than expected at the JUCO level, these are the guys we should be going after (easier said than done, I know), not the guys that are barely better than our freshman and sophomores.

This is exactly the mentality I don't understand. To state that not utilizing JUCOs much is building the right way then utilizing more JUCOs must be building the wrong way. I don't understand why using JUCOs is the wrong way? I'm not suggesting stacking each recruiting class with 10+ JUCOs but just utilizing it more.

I also don't understand this 4-5 year golden rule thing. So, does that mean we turn down a 4 or 5 star recruit that likely starts as a Freshmen and is likely to leave after a Junior? Would utilizing several of those be the wrong way because none would graduate? JUCOs can come in and redshirt + play 2 years = 3 years in the program.

I also don't understand why JUCO players have no chance to develop but somehow our Sophomores still have an unlimited ceiling.

JUCOs don't work for every program, but from what I've seen, Bohl is pretty darn good at picking out JUCO talent. I think he should have done more of it ala Bill Snyder (Wasn't that the gospel around here? The program to emulate?).

There is absolutely nothing wrong with getting 4 to 6 jucos per class. Kansas State does it, and Utah was successful doing it when they were in the MW. Jucos are like any other recruits, they have to be the right fit (Allen & Hollister). Bohl seems to have talent in finding quality JUCOs, wish he would have pulled some more in last year.
