Not only do the Cowboys NEED to win...

I don't sense the fan base is all that enthusiastic about the upcoming season, but I do sense that the opening game has never had more significance in determining the temperature and climate for the program.

This is the sense I get too. There is very little belief in the program right now and the fanbase is in "prove it" mode. A loss to CSU to open the season will cause a lot of people to tune out for the remainder of the season.

I don't think Jay Sawvel really understands that. I get the feeling he is hoping to cobble together 6-7 wins against the likes of Northern Colorado, NIU, and UTEP and proclaim "progress".
 
To be honest, I'm fearful of it turning into that ASU game. Hopeful that the new OC and players turn out great, and we are wildly impressed. Hearing Sawful on 1240 yesterday and last year, I'm still trying to understand what kind of program he thinks he inherited compared to what Bohl or Glenn walked into.
 
The early line on the game is csewe +3.5. Frankly, that's a lot closer than I expected. I would be surprised if Mora doesn't turn them around right away. And we have a lot of question marks. I can't shake the feeling that even if you gave Sawvel the keys to a Ferrari, he'd still lose in a race with a Prius. Thanks Tom!
 
I have seen nothing from CSU in the last 10 years that tells me a new coach will fix them, much like our program. Somehow Sawvel beat them 28-0. I do trust their head coach more than ours.

The bad choice Svoboda pass play at AFA and the home game no show #17 retirement game against Nevada removed the possibility of a 6-6 season.

As a fan that sucks and it is a huge reason why it is challenging to be enthusiastic about Cowboy football. I want to be excited but just can’t seem to want to make plans to attend a game since nearly every game is a 1,000+ mile road trip for me still feeling the bitter taste of losing 5 of the last 6 games of 2025.

As a long time season ticket holder and a person who lives well within driving distance of Laramie, I am preparing for the possibility of my first row season tickets potentially going unused for multiple games (i.e. won't even be able to give them away). Combine a potentially bad team, a terrible conference, a terrible home slate of games, giving away our best home game, multiple cold friday night games and a potentially dreadful November 28 home game against UCONN...yea, my fall has a good chance of having much more openings than I am accustomed to. I guess the wife might be happy.

Hope the team goes out and goes 12-0. But I've been around long enough to see that coaches don't typically suddenly figure it all out.
 
Count me among the "prove it" crowd. I have already told my wife that this will be my last year buying season tickets after 30+ years if they are not vastly improved from last year. I honestly don't see but one game this year I am likely to attend.

and we pulled one out of our ass against San Jose, which was nice for a change. I'm used to mediocre wyoming teams not showing up against the worst Joser teams in history.

Bobo had no head coaching experience. Norvell had a so so record at Nevada. And the other guy, whose name escapes me, actually beat us the covid year.
Mora has had multiple 9+ win seasons at UCLA and UConn.
Sawvel beat a csewe team that fired their coach the week they played us. If you watched that game, I thought csewe quit.

Mora was 9-16 in his first two seasons at Uconn but did take them to a bowl game as a 6-6 team. taking over a dumpster fire is tough work. Bohl needed two years. While at UCLA he took over Rick N team that actually won South Division in 2011 6-8 overall and 5-4 in PAC play. Team was far from a dumpster fire. Had 4 really good years and then left them in a pile of ash. 28-25 in PAC play. He went 18-7 final two years at Uconn, with a few nice wins. Duke/BC in 25' and beat UNC in bowl game in 24'. in 24', their wins were Merrimack, FA, Buffalo, Temple, Rice, Georgia St, UAB and Umass. Now, I think it's pretty clear that he's superior to our head coach, i just don't think he's some kind of magician. maybe with portal, it'll be easier to turn CSU around, but to declare us dead against this team is a bit ludacris.

I don't declare us dead. I'm curious and hopeful the new OC and qb can work wonders. But I do think Mora is a much better hire (on paper) than they've made in the past.

The opening game will come down to who is best prepared to execute the game plan. The sheep supposedly got improvement via the portal.

Unfortunately the Cowboy football program tends to be the team most likely to struggle with game preparation and execution especially if the opponent throws something at them they weren’t expecting.
