Game 1 assessments

Anderson-looked ok, good arm, decent mobility, needs to be more accurate. I think he will settle down as year goes on.
Running game was decent - Scott runs hard, hits the holes, but I think need to find change of pace scat back to mix in.
Receivers look pretty good - I think we finally have a decent receiving core, that we have not had for a while.
Defense looked good. I do not know how good Akron is, but you can't do better than a shutout.

I think Wyo gets the dub next week, but I am really curious on how the pokes play against the Utes and Buffs.

Take every W that you can get, especially ones on the road. I want to see the Cowboys go out and absolutely handle FCS UNI.

Honestly, Akron, kings of the Bottom 10, will struggle to win 2 games probably this year.

I think we handle UNI. We can compete with CU. Utah and their mobile QB? Not likely. That one could get ugly.

Until we address our issues on our offensive line, we will be mid at best. You have to be able to pick up a yard on 3rd and/or 4th down. We couldn't. We got smoked. By Akron.

The play calling on those attempts appeared to be the same each time - between RG and RT with Scott lining up deep in the backfield and Anderson under center. The gaps in the defensive line would have made for an easy QB sneak. Akron brought LB’s as soon as we snapped the ball and were obviously handing off the ball for a right side push.

Nothing creative. No misdirection. No fake toss to Scott and then pulling back for a short pass to the TE. All the things that would have made the defense have to stay spread out. Reminded me of Glenn doing the same thing and repeatedly coming up empty.

All true. JJ is crap as a play caller. But the fact that our RG and RT got NO push in any of those runs is also concerning.

Kaden should have pulled the ball in the red zone and could have walked into the endzone. Though I agree with some of the play calling and player rotations, true freshmen RB dancing; I do believe Kaden had some bad reads

1. Any pressure on pass plays was a problem. Anderson was woefully inaccurate on the move especially to the left.

2. I said it before but Akron O was terrible. They clearly missed plays that was more lack of execution than defensive play. There's not much to knock the D about. They played well and pitched a shutout. I just don't think Akron is a good measuring stick.

3. After the turnover and Akron was marching down the field before Johnson intercepted, I don't know why but I had flashbacks to the pre-Bohl era of wearing down at the end of games. If Akron scores there, do we still have the no quit? I think so, but, probably ptsd, I do wonder a little.

4. Run game should be solid but offense as a whole needs to find rhythm.

You don't go 2-0 without 1-0. Road win. Take it but don't be satisfied with performance is how I rate that game.

We've already faced Dampier last season when he was playing for New Mexico. And yes, he obliterated us. He accounted for 371 yards of offense and 4 TD's by himself. I cringed when I saw he picked Utah to transfer to.

I'm not sure how we stop him. Even if we run a spy, I don't know that we have anyone athletic enough to be able to consistently take him down 1-on-1 in the open field.

UCLA wasn't prepared or able to stop him.
