UNLV game

I thought we had a good chance in this one. Turnovers and punt blocking obviously stood out. The O is struggling with balance and rhythm. A lot of that is miscues but when they put a drive together, it looked pretty good. That didn't happen nearly enough. The philosophy of getting a lot of plays without worrying about top is a big change.

2-3 at this point was probably where most thought we'd be. We'll see. Still 7 games left.

Oh and another hot take - the reseating of the west side has officially entered the pathetic stage. At kickoff, lower west side was less than half full (on homecoming and the MWC opener). By the third quarter, it was less than 1/4 full.

Get used to this no emotion we sold the best seats to some corporate sponsors who never come to the games. It killed the AA and now War Memorial is quickly headed that way.

We need to score more than 3 points in the first half of a game before I can get optimistic about our prospects. The only reason we got 3 today was a fumble by UNLV. The offense is deficient in so many ways that I'm shocked when they actually score. And if there is any team that needs competent special teams, it's us. We punt so much that you'd think we'd be good at it.

Aside from the obvious miscues, the run/pass play calls were not in synch. The first down play is critical with this squad. They did generate some yards and first downs but couldn't finish drives. Also a few 3 and outs when a drive was drastically needed.

The O was uneven and unsteady but wasn't totally incompetent. The drives to open the 2nd half were pretty good until the int. A better ball and that was a TD. The window was there in the corner; Anderson just noodle armed that one. From play calls, to penalties, to miscues, just so many drive killing problems.

Points by quarter against FBS teams....and Akron
1st 3
2nd 6
3rd 17
4th 27

Point differential at the beginning of each quarter
Akr Utah CU Vegas
2nd 0, -3, 0, -14
3rd +3, -3, -18, -21
4th +3, -17, -15, -14

Take home message- slow starts are proving to be insurmountable unless we're playing Akron.

The 2nd blocked punt was so bad that it was comical. 2 of the 3 up men stood flat footed as 2 Rebels ran past them. The 3rd took one step as the guy was already past him. At least on the 1st one, the 2 up men each blocked someone. UNREAL.

Good rundown. This team can't seem to get going in 1st half. Definitely a sign of poor preparation. Practice isn't mimicking gameday.

If Anderson hits that td to pull within 7 instead of the int, this game would have been quite a bit different. Get a stop and you aren't fighting the clock--open playbook.

Jay Johnson’s track record speaks for itself. His offenses have historically done poorly early in games and overall, he is not a proven winner. Sawvel didn’t sugarcoat things in the postgame, but what he doesn’t seem to want to address is that he has control to do something about it. Demote Johnson and put someone else in charge of the offense! At least it would give another person a chance to audition for that job. I can’t imagine the long term plan is to keep the guy, so stop trying to make something happen. It’s not going to. Unless he’s too blinded by loyalty, he’s got to see it. We can all see that there are some capable players out there. The scheme is just not working.

Anderson had time but he cannot find a secondary receiver to save his life. I saw more than a few play where it was forced to someone who was covered while others were open I had hopes for him but it is time to try someone else

Sawvell needs to be fired NOW. He doesn't have a clue as to how to manage and lead a football team to success. He will be fired eventually but sadly, based on Burman's past, the players, their families, and fans will have to suffer a LOT more before it happens.

I don’t think we have the money to buy him out. It’s another Joe Glenn situation where we couldn’t afford a buyout then, so he cut ties with his OC - Cockhill. I’m not convinced Sawvel even likes being a head coach. He seems so uncomfortable on the sidelines. He’s a hell of a DC, but he lacks the confidence of a head coach. Maybe he’ll throw his name out there to teams looking for a DC. Lord knows a P4 team pays their DC’s more than we do a head coach, so why not?

But Burman will get another raise for his vision in generating corporate revenue

I agree about that second blocked punt. 97 just stood there while the UNLV guy ran right passed him to the punter. There was no attempt to block him. I'm speechless.

I'm going to suggest another possibility. Is it possible that the opponent takes their foot off the gas in the second half after being 3 scores ahead at half? We piled on some stats in the 2nd half against CU. The game was never in doubt. We never did anything vs. Utah.
We got a quick score in the 2nd half vs UNLV and then the stupidest penalty you can get. I don't blame Anderson. The receiver had to be behind the line of scrimmage. The ensuing interception was almost inevitable. UNLV woke up and we never threatened again until we were down 3 scores. Until this offense actually scores when the game isn't a blowout, I can't share your view that this offense has done some good things. They've done literally nothing when the score is close.

Those upbacks typically have inside blocking duties only.

If a punt formation is set up correctly, an edge rusher should not have time to get to the ball before it is already punted even when left completely unblocked.

That punt was blocked because of a very slow punt time and a bad snap. Those upbacks look bad, but they were doing what they were supposed to do.
