Host of local athletes move
sport careers into college

With high school sports on the holiday hiatus. We at the Daily News thought it would be a good time to get caught up on where former local prep stars are playing in college and how they are doing in their respective sport.

Jorden Osbon, formerly of Worland, is in his freshman year at Utah Valley University. He is wrestling for the University at 141 pounds and has competed in two tournaments wrestling unattached this year. So far he is 1-4 on the season. His first college win came by a pin at 0:36 at the Northwest College Open in Powell. He also competed at the Cowboy Open in Laramie.

Matt Osbon, formerly of Worland, is in his freshman year at Northern State University in Aberdeen, S.D. He is the starting wrestler for the team at 133 pounds. He has one win on the year after only competing in a dual and one tournament, due to an illness injury that has sidelined him for most of the year.

Scott Soderstrom, formerly of Worland, is a junior playing strong safety for the football team at Black Hills State University. He had 11 unassisted tackles and nine assisted tackles on the year. This includes one tackle for a loss against Jamestown College in September.

Steven Soderstrom, formerly of Worland, is redshirting for the football team at Black Hills State University. He plays linebacker. Black Hills State finished the year 6-4 overall and 5-3 in conference.

Hunter Burningham, formerly of Ten Sleep, is in his sophomore season at Rocky Mountain College in Billings where he is playing JV basketball. After not playing much his freshman year Burningham has started about half of the games this year at the point guard spot. He is averaging 12.3 points per game, 5.1 rebounds, 5.6 assists and 3.5 steals per game.

Cody Smith, formerly of Worland, is redshirting for the football team at Black Hills State University. He plays free safety. Black Hills State finished the year 6-4 overall and 5-3 in conference play.

Chris Leyba, formerly of Thermopolis, is a freshman for the football team at Black Hills State University. He is redshirting this year, and his position is linebacker.

Colin Herold, formerly of Thermopolis, walked on to the University of Wyoming football team this past year. He is redshirting for the team and his position is wide receiver. The Cowboys finished the year 3-9.

Kasey Garnhart, formerly of Ten Sleep who wrestled with Greybull/Riverside, is wrestling at the University of Wyoming. Garnhart is the varsity wrestler at 133 pounds. In his most recent matchup Garnhart helped the Cowboys win the Reno Tournament of Champions by winning his match 3-2 and scoring one major decision. For the year Garnhart is 5-1 overall. For his career Garnhart is 22-16.

Stephen Pyer, formerly of Worland, is in his first year with Hastings College in Neb. He played soccer for his first two years at Laramie Community College before transferring to Hastings College. So far this year he has played in two games while tallying one shot against University of Sioux Falls, S.D.

Shelby Sweeney, formerly of Worland, finished up her first season on the cross-country team at Carroll College in Helena. Sweeney, a walk-on with the team, is running varsity for the Saints and finished the NAIA National competition in 248th place with a time of 20:43. Her biggest moment of the season came when she proved to be the difference in helping the Saints win their first Frontier Conference title. She placed 15th in that race with a time of 20 minutes 38 seconds.

Russell Shelton, formerly of Worland, is in his freshman season with Rocky Mountain College. He is playing football where he is the backup kicker on the team. Rocky Mountain just finished up a 5-5 season.

Nick Voss, formerly of Worland, is a redshirt freshman at Rocky Mountain College. He is playing football where he plays as a linebacker. In his first year he has played in one game where he had one assisted tackle.

Chantz Ramos, formerly of Worland, is in his sophomore year at Northwest Community College in Powell. He is playing point guard for the basketball team, and has started a majority of the games for them this season. So far this year Ramos is averaging 3.1 points per game and 2.4 rebounds per game. He is also tied for the team lead in steals with 14 on the year.

Robert Heyer, formerly of Worland, is in his freshman year at Sheridan Community College. The former 3A basketball player of the year is averaging 4.1 points per game and 3.8 rebounds per game for the Generals. He is also averaging 1.5 assists per game in helping Sheridan Community College to an 11-1 start to their 2010/2011 season.

Paige Neves, formerly of Burlington, is a redshirt freshman at Utah State University in Logan, Utah. The former volleyball state champion with Burlington is playing the setter position. According to the university’s Website they project Neves as a very good player as she continues to learn the college system.
