Wow, this has been interesting. Thanks to everyone who responded. Some great narrative to go along with the poll.

70% of respondents have been fans since the 1980’s or earlier with many going back to the 1960’s. There are some long time Poke fans on here.

I am surprised at the lack of 21st century fans. I guess they are all on Twitter or something. I remember on the original gowyogo there were a number of students posting inside information we couldn’t get elsewhere. I miss that.

I think it would be interesting to see how long everyone has been a fan of the Pokes. I am sure those of us who watched the Cowboys play LSU in the Sugar Bowl and lived through the Black 14 incident have a whole different perspective than those who have only experienced the 21st century Pokes. I had to wait nearly 40 years between bowl game wins (1966 - 2004).

Born May of '88. First game was Border War in 1997, but all my years growing up it's been Dave and Kevin on the radio. So I too have been a fan since birth. My grandparents had been donors for years until both their passing in the last 3 years.

My first live game was 1994 around the time the family moved closer to Laramie from the northern part of the state. Prior to that, dad would have the game on the radio and I’d listen in on occasion. I became a super fan in 1996 when Harris and Wallwork lit up the scoreboard.

Have a mod convert this to a poll - I think it would be very interesting to see.

That said, I remember Fritz Shurmer taking on ASU at home in '71 or '72...vividly. When I wasn't playing a little football myself on the grass where the beer "garden" is these days.

I also remember knothole tickets for us kids were dirt cheap back then. I think $2.00, and the stands were in the north end-zone surrounded by 40 year old pines. Players came out of a tunnel under the west side stands, and ran across the field.

Ah...the memories!
Dear Karma,

I have a list of people you missed...

Didn’t pay a lot of attention to the Pokes in high school but came to UW in the fall of ‘88. First game was the first night game at War Memorial on ESPN under temporary lights and the Cowboys thrashed Ty Detmer and the Cougars 24-14 with 4 picks and 5 sacks. What a run that started and I was hooked on Cowboy football.

96 was a great season until the infamous intentional safety. Too bad the Pokes didn’t get a bowl game that year.

Since I was born in 1975. Family has been Wyoming fans going back to my great grandfather. So basically since the football team started playing. I’m in the 40-50 year category.

First game I went to was when Wyoming played a home game against UNLV back in the late 70’s. I remember as a little kid being worried about the cannon going off and it being too loud before I ever heard them set it off. Was asking my dad and grandparents how loud it was and wondering if it was going to hurt my ears or something lol… was only like 3 or 4 years old I believe.

Remember listening to the POKES in elk camp when I was a kid. Looking back that was kind of awesome. Sitting in a wall tent with wood stove cranking, everyone gathered around a table with radio in the middle, adults boozing it up, and bitter cold outside. We always made a game or two every couple of years, but the distance was a little prohibitive. Also, for those that don't remember, the late 70s and through much of the 80s were pretty tough times for a lot of folks. Not a lot of money around which I'm pretty sure is why we didn't go to a lot of games and instead listened on the radio.

I also remember the late night bball games. We'd stay over at a friends house who had cable or satellite and catch the late night basketball games. I don't think any of us made it until the end, haha.

Been a POKE fan ever since.

Might be a lot of Gen Xers? Born up to 1980, fans as kids in the 80s?

I agree that this poll also indirectly indicates how many fans under 30 years of age are on this forum....

I cried watching that game on TV. From that day forward, I learned to root against BYU in everything. My favorite teams became Wyoming and whoever was playing BYU in a given week.

Louder for the people in the back!

Yes, the sheep are our main rival. I want only one thing more than to beat the sheep year-in and year-out, and that is for every team that ever plays the borg to stomp them into the mud every game and bang the players' wives, girlfriends, sisters, mothers, and mistresses afterwards.

Been a fan since 1983 (might have been 1982) when I saw a regional T.V. telecast of Wyoming @ Nebraska. Don't remember much from it.

First game I attended was the Arkansas State game in 1990 at the WAR.

Born in 1974.
I want CHAMPIONSHIPS not chicken poop! And we're getting chicken poop!!!!!!!!!!!
