Cowboys in Colorado 6th Year: My take away from the session this morning. Great turnout this morning with approximately 70 in attendance for our 6th annual CIC recruiting summary by the football staff. The staff was blown away that in the back yard of CSU that such following exists for the Pokes. It was a great breakfast meeting. Given that most players were signed in December and the number of stories and information posted on each player signed, I am not rehashing what you can easily read on this site. I thought that this was a good review:

Justin Mesa: This year we had recruiting coordinator Justin Mesa who is new to the position in replacing Gordie Haug that transitioned to the coaching staff with the running backs. By the way they are certainly pleased with Leonard Fournette apparently at the HAPC for a month and being able to touch base with him re the running back from a player's perspective. They want to leverage that presence at much as possible. BTW--the football team's GPA recorded in the last grade period was the highest ever in UW football history

Coach Moore: It was also a great pleasure to listen to the new TE/FB and special teams coach. Shannon Moore joined the staff in January from three years at East Carolina University. He was previously at South Dakota State, Florida International and East Carolina, and he has a great enthusiasm for the University of Wyoming. Coach Moore is from Gordon , Nebraska in western Nebraska, and played at Black Hills State. His wife is from Casper, Wyoming, a KWHS and a UW graduate. He definitely brings a ton of energy to the program and better yet he has a great understanding of the background and culture at the University of Wyoming. He met a point to speak with virtually all of the 70 in attendance and to say he is not a rising star in the coaching ranks is an undergarment. He will be responsible for Wyo, Nebraska, Dakotas and Montana recruiting.

More on Coach Moore: The facilities at UW clearly surpass what he has seen on the east coast at Conf USA and the AAC.

Recruiting Takeaway summary:

In a nut shell: 1. High football IQ; 2. Wyoming signed several players that were exceptions to the general rule of what they are looking for, but they believe that what they lacked in physical attributes is made up in skill, toughness and dedication. These young men have that chip on their shoulder that will make that extra play in the 4thQ when you need that extra play. 3. Athleticism, extra speed and taking that athleticism to the defensive side of the ball with a couple of HS QBs being placed on the defensive side. 4. A commitment to waiting for the running back stable that they put together in the later phase of the two stage signing period by signing the three backs they did. They like the exceptional speed that Alphonzo Andrews has as a small dynamic running back. He can change direction with ease and when he finds a hole, he shows great burst down the field.

Wide Receiver Group: They knew what they wanted and they picked up a group that several other G5 programs have at the minimum are jealous of zUW's ability to sign all of them.

P5 Poaching: Yes, UW poached several P5 players with P5 offers. Honesty and integrity in the recruiting process made the players and their parents comfortable with their son's future at a program led by Coach Bohl. Several examples of P5 schools extending north of 500 offers for a class of 25 while Wyoming was the exception of offers in the low 100s.

Tight End Group: Not surprisingly Josh Harshman is leading the way in that room and improvement by Marcotte and Weinman.

The 500 mile radius: Some frustration with what they try to do with players in the radius. This year they didn't sign enough players within that range. The Colorado field had very top end guys that went to higher level P5 and for whatever reason that UW tier just didn't seem to surface. Wyoming clearly made a commitment to Texas in the 2019 class. Coach Bohl wants to know about players in this radius to make sure that such a player is inadvertently lost. A commitment to land each and every year Wyoming's Gator aid player of the year. At the end the signees kept true to early commits to the Pokes except for one player at the end that elected to stay closer to home although at a smaller school.

The staff was not happy with a 6 and 6 record in 2018 and the optimism for 2019 was evident.
