The Pokes fell to nationally ranked and division-leading Boise State 20-17 in OT on Saturday night bringing their record on the season to 6-3 with three games left to play on the schedule. Here is a look at some key team and individual statistics of note as the Cowboys get ready for a game versus Utah State in Logan.

Boise Blues

Wyoming fell to 1-13 all-time versus Boise State which includes a 0-7 record on the blue turf. The one win allowed Wyoming to reach the Mountain West Championship Game in 2016 and the fact is if Wyoming wants to reach their goals as a consistent MW title contender then they need to find a way to be more competitive versus the Broncos as the road to the Mountain West Championship game in the Mountain Division goes through Boise, Idaho.

No Defensive Dropoff

The Cowboy defense exits the Boise State game allowing just 17.8 points per game which is good for second in the Mountain West (behind San Diego State) and 14th nationally which is quite the accomplishment. Many were concerned the defense would take a step back with Scottie Hazelton moving on to Kansas State but new defensive coordinator Jake Dickert hasn’t missed a beat with the Pokes defense. In fact, they are allowing 4.1 points less per game than Hazelton did in his final season in Laramie.

Valladay Road

Sophomore running back Xazavian Valladay has been nothing short of sensational as Wyoming’s only healthy scholarship runner on the depth chart after injuries to Smith and Sween. Valladay has rushed for over 100 yards in three consecutive games and ranks 3rd in the Mountain West in rushing yards with 755 and 9th in all-purpose yards with 875 yards which is good for 5.5 yards every time he touches the ball.

Captain Interception

Late in the 4th quarter senior linebacker Logan Wilson intercepted a Boise State pass giving Wyoming a shot at a game-winning hail mary. It was Wilson’s second interception of the season and the Casper native now has 8 interceptions in his Wyoming career. Those interceptions place Wilson in a tie for 10th on Wyoming’s all-time interceptions list with another Casper, Wyoming native in defensive back Jacque Finn.

Why Don’t You Meet Me In The Middle

Wyoming ran 27 first-down plays against Boise State on Saturday night and for many people, it may seem that 99.9% of those plays were runs up the middle. Wyoming actually only ran 14 first-down plays that were runs up the middle for 51.8% of first-down plays. I will leave that up to you if you think that is too predictable of a percentage for rushing plays up the middle.
