The Wyoming Cowboys have completed three of their fifteen spring practices and head coach Craig Bohl addressed the quarterback position with the media yesterday. When asked about the status of the competition he said:

I think it’s too early, there is going to be a body of work that we’ll be looking at.  We’re mixing our two quarterbacks (Josh Allen and Nick Smith) going from the first group to the second group.  We’re charting everything they do.  One guy will have a better day than the other on a certain day, but we’ll continue to evaluate our quarterbacks.  Competition brings out the best in people, and both guys are competing well.

This should come as no surprise and the coaching staff is going to let this competition play out. One other comment Bohl made that caught my attention was the fact he thought that the QB’s needed to improve their pass completion percentage especially on the short passes that the west coast offense often uses. This would suggest that perhaps Allen hasn’t at this point in time separated himself from Smith in the passing game. Most people fully expect this to happen but remember in terms of playing time both Allen and Smith are inexperienced and this QB be battle will be played out until after the Spring Game when the coaching staff hopes to name their starter.

UPDATE: Wyoming has released a video with Allen and Smith view it below.
