1976 WAC Champion Football Team

The Hall of Fame committee met in January to select this year’s class. The class must fit into one of five categories including student-athlete, coach, team, staff member, or special achievement. Highlights of the class include the 1976 WAC champion football team was an 8-4 squad led by Fred Akers. The Pokes were the WAC co-champions and went onto to play Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl. Hanna Zavecz was part of the most popular women’s team ever at Wyoming. As a junior Zavecz led the Cowgirls to a WNIT championship. As a senior the Cowgirls were ranked in the top 25 for the first time in school history. Dave Walsh will also be inducted. As the “voice of the Cowboys” Walsh has been a mainstay for the Pokes for many generations of Poke fans on the radio across the Cowboy state. His voice has seen some of the best of times and some of the worst of times for the Cowboys and Cowgirls.
