I could launch into a rant where I note the Wyoming defense ranks 100th in the country in scoring defense allowing 33.4 points a game. I could also note that with new coaches, a new scheme and new players that the rush defense hasn’t improved one bit ranking 120th in the nation allowing 253 yards per game but I don’t have the stomach for it right now. Most of you out there can see clearly what flaws this team and program has in year four of the Dave Christensen era ; so today I shall turn the other cheek and highlight a positive.

The highlights in the midst of a 1-4 start begin and end with QB Brett Smith who is an elite player when he follows the rules and keeps his helmet on. Smith ranks 15th in the nation in terms of passing yards per game at 294.3 which is second in the MW behind Fresno State’s Derek Carr. Smith comes in at 9th in total offense at 334 yards per game which is number one in the Mountain West. Smith is currently Wyoming’s leading rusher with 162 yards on the ground so far this season. These are no doubt outstanding numbers from a sophomore QB who has very little talent around him at the moment. How lethal would the Pokes offense be if Alvester Alexander decided to stick around?

So there you go a little injection of positivity from me as Wyoming gears up for a rivalry game versus the Air Force. Let’s hope #16 is out there for all four quarters!
