2. Roullier steps in: Rookie center Chase Roullier received a thumbs-up from his veteran teammates for his work at center as he filled in for Spencer Long, who will miss time after arthroscopic knee surgery. Roullier had worked with the first team during one practice during training camp and got some work with Cousins on Tuesday, as well. Wednesday’s work went smoothly according to Cousins and left tackle Trent Williams.

That’s because of the work that offensive line coach Bill Callahan has done with Roullier since Washington drafted him in the sixth round out of Wyoming, Williams said.

“He’s composed. He’s smart and he picks up on everything. He’s ready to go,” Williams said. “Coach been riding him probably the hardest of anybody since he stepped into our room. He’s primed and ready to go. I’m excited to see how he does.”

Roullier said that Washington’s offense is very similar to the system he played in at Wyoming. But here, he’s in charge of making protection calls for the offensive line. Cousins can change those calls if he sees something differently. But it’s the center’s goal to make a correct diagnosis to help the quarterback.

Roullier said that’s a process he’s still getting used to. Film and playbook study are key to that success. But decisiveness also ranks high on the list, the rookie is learning.

“Just get a call out,” Roullier said Callahan and Long have told him. “Sometimes, even if it’s the wrong call, if I get a call out, then at least the entire offensive line is on the same page. It’s just about getting something out there.”
